White Lace Dresses

It’s the very last day of January, did you enjoy the first month of 2012?  I’ve been busy as a bee and lucky as a duck.  Fingers crossed it’s an omen of good things to come!

I’ve just posted three new dreamy white lace dresses in my etsy shop. Spring has almost sprung, and I’m so excited about these.  If I didn’t stop myself, I would wear lace every day of the week…

Arrow and Apple

Hello friends!

James and I have been up late every night this week, brainstorming and giggling about our little movie project.  Arrow & Apple is having a contest…to win wedding photography!  It involves making a short film, so Mr. Hobbs and I set out with our bikes on a little filming adventure…

As if an analogy to life and marriage, our little video relied completely on the generosity of others:

Thanks Spencer Lindsay for letting us borrow your amazing camera

Thanks Terry Hardin for letting us borrow your fancy sound recorder

Thanks Dave Haut for letting us borrow your truck when our car broke down on filming day

Here is the facebook link to our little movie:

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.317471408288311.67707.173670106001776&type=1#!/photo.php?fbid=317471711621614&set=a.317471408288311.67707.173670106001776&type=3&theater

My favorite part of the day was when we were filming a shot of us walking and talking together.  We could say anything we wanted since we weren’t recording sound, so James started up a little convo.

Arrow and Apple Photography Contest

**A little background: James and I are vegan, and once in a while we treat ourselves to a bit of fish.  Here is the conversation he started when we were filming (keep in mind that we could say anything and it wouldn’t matter),

J: So, what do you want to have for dinner?

B: Hmmm, I don’t know, what do you want?

J: How about Salmon Burgers?

B: Oh! Great idea!  Let’s have some beers, too!

J: Definitely!

So after a long day of filming, James and I are finally driving back and he asks, “What should we get for dinner?”  And I say, “What about Salmon Burgers?!? I’m so excited!!!”  His reply was, “Oh, really?  I was just saying that for the camera…”

Hahhahaha…ok.  So here is how you can help out! We need to get votes so we can win this thing!

Go to Arrow & Apples’ facebook page and “like” them

Then find the picture of us, and “like ” it

Then leave a little comment (you could even just say “Salmon Burgers!” That would send me into another fit of giggles!)

We get a point for every “like” and every comment we get, so get to voting!

Thanks from the bottom of my little heart!

A Wedding

James and I were engaged in 2010 (!!), and have a wedding date set for this August.  Naturally, we have done very little in the way of planning…

In keeping with the challenge, I’m going to try to do a Nothing New wedding! From the table décor to the dress (more on that later) I’m attempting to get it all second-hand. I’ve been collecting milk glass, coloured glass, pins, teacups, and books for the past year.

tea cups and milk glass

As I search through the blogs, I’m seeing the widely discussed (perhaps mythical) $10,000 wedding and I’m wondering if I can’t work that out for myself. That just seems like an awful lot of money to me that could be spent…thrifting? snowboarding? getting more bunnies?  What do you think?

If you’re getting married too, congrats!  Here are my favorite wedding blogs:

The Broke Ass Bride – right up my alley…

Green Wedding Shoes – love!

100 Layer Cake – who doesn’t love?

James and I spent all weekend filming and editing a little video about us and our wedding.  I can’t wait to share it with you!

Sunday Bunday: Recycled Pet Litter

Happy Sunday Bunday!

I want to share with you how Emily and I are sticking to our Nothing New challenge.  Today the subject is bunny litter.

There are a wide variety of litter fillers out there for small pets like bunnies, hamsters, rodents, etc.  Some are even called “eco” or “recycled,” but Emily and I prefer to do the recycling ourselves, if we can.

When I used to work at the Bookshop, I took advantage of their industrial shredder, which produced nice little baby pieces of paper.  Now I have my own shredder, which isn’t as nice, but it was within my price range and gosh darn it, it does the job!

I save all of my papers and newspapers, and once a week I’ll do a big shred.  I stuff those strips into an old hay bag and Voila!  Free recycled litter.

A note about self-recycled litter:

  • It doesn’t have any added fragrances or chemicals (which I see as a bonus ), so you’ll have to clean your friend’s litter every day or so.  But you should be doing that anyway, the smell of their pee can be toxic
  • Make sure you get plenty material that does NOT have any ink on it.  Emily loves to eat her litter, and ink is not very good for her system

When it’s time to empty Emily’s litter, I throw it into the compost to recycle again.  Close the loop!

Do you have a small friend who recycles?

Kirkwood Tickets

James and I have ran into a mighty streak of luck.  I don’t know how, but recently we’ve been so lucky!  See?

Yup, those are two free lift tickets to Kirkwood.  Remember how I said that we were watching a lot of snowboarding movies? Well, we drove by our local theatre and they were having a viewing of one that we loved.  We went to the theatre’s website to get more info, and found out they were giving the first 40 people in the door free lift tickets.  WHAT?!?!?  That night it was pouring rain and we were still out there waiting for our  free lifties!

Plus, the movie tickets were supposed to be $10 each, and we ended up getting those for free, too!  Double-whammy!

We saw “One For The Road” on Friday, and it was great to be in a room full of so many enthusiasts.  This Thursday we’re off to see “The Art of Flight” (so good), and fingers crossed we’ll get another two lift tickets!

Dont believe me about the rain?  Remember I said I would check back in January?  Well lookee here at the creek in my back yard:

After:

See?  We got a bit of water, finally!  (Lucky again.)

Are you feeling lucky this week?

I posted the skirts in my blog today, but I listed them on etsy yesterday, did you miss out on one?  Keep track of me on facebook to get my etsy updates!

Thrifted Treasure: Goodwill

Last week I went to a new Goodwill.  I travelled 20 minutes to the next town, and boy was it worth it!  The people there were so nice…they actually greeted me when I came in!  There were clean bathrooms!  There was lots of nice stuff!  I can’t stop gushing.

My mom told me about this before…the “affluent area thrift store” phenomenon.  Thrift stores in the more ritzy parts of town are less likely to be frequented by the residents, and more likely to receive some good quality items.  Double whammy.  My treasures:

goodwill thrifted treasure

1. Cute shoes (real leather ) – $5.25

2. Adorable plate (James says its for avocados) – $1.50

3. Amazing giant tote bag – $3.25

4. Cozy Slipper/Boots – $7.25

5. 80′s dress (to be modified, don’t worry) – $5.25

6. Mustard Faux leather purse with cheetah lining – $12.95

Check back for how I transform that beautiful blue dress!

Upcycled Floral Skirt

Yesterday I rigged a photo studio on my deck, and I’ve had a bit of luck creating my white background.  Here is something I haven’t posted in the shop for a while: a good ol’ elastic waist skirt.  The other ones went so quickly, and I’ve been meaning to list some more.   Now available in my etsy shop, size XS.

Upcycled Floral Skirt

This one is so cute and 90′s, I don’t know why I went for this fabric but I once again found myself drawn to the mixing of patterns.

Nothing New Upcycled Skirt

Today I’m going to get that photo studio going again and photograph some more skirts.  Have a great day!

Thrifted Belt and Mug

Adorable vintage purse for $1.60  And I’m always a sucker for a glass mug.  Especially if it’s country-themed; it reminds me of my grandmother.  Mug $0.99, Belts $1.60 each

White Lace Dress

It’s slow-going with the photo taking.  Lately I’ve had difficulty deciding which background I should choose: white or forest.  A well-lit white background is hard to come by in my neck of the woods (no pun intended, promise).  So to obtain the sought after white wall I’m forced into town.  Where people can see me posing like a fool in front of the camera all by myself.  Lucky for me, I’m not the only crazy in Santa Cruz.

Without further ado, here is a lovely little number I’ve just listed in my etsy shop.  It used to be a tablecloth, and I think it’s safe to say that the previous owners liked wine.  Why else would you go with the big grapes?  I think this dress would be just perfect for a day of wine tasting or a picnic at the winery.  Size M/L.

This is the belt that came with my SallyAnn dress.

So what do you think?  White background or forest?
